A lesson in business chic

On her blog Business Chic, or BusiChic, Cheryl Lin shows people how to liven up their work wear because, let’s be frank, office workers can tend to look identical. Working in the finance industry, Cheryl started her blog in early 2010 as a way of cataloguing people’s outfits at work.

Running a blog and having a ‘real’ job makes Cheryl one busy lady and I ask how she is able to manage her time. She tells me she that constantly having her camera on her and the fact that she gets around on a bicycle makes it easy for her to snap street style photos almost anywhere.

But Business Chic is more than just a blog. Cheryl also began to offer photography services after receiving questions from people who, for example, wanted to update their LinkedIn profile. It doesn’t stop there as Cheryl hopes to create a range of Business Chic accessories; the first being a pair of elbow length leather gloves which will be available next month.

A project that has been going on since the beginning of the year is the Business Chic Black Dress Project where Cheryl wears the same black dress (a tailored, sleeveless and knee length dress by Bento) to work once a week for an entire year.

If this sounds familiar it is because Sheena Matheiken initiated the same project in 2009, wear she wore the same dress to work for 365 days as a response to sustainable fashion and the fashion world’s unequivocal love for the timelessness of the Little Black Dress.

Scared that she might run out of ideas, Cheryl admits to making a spreadsheet of all possible outfit combinations before starting the project. Fourteen weeks into the project, Cheryl’s clever styling has seen her pair her dress with a blazer or trench coat, bold accessories or a collared shirt underneath.
