DUDSPACE

DUDSPACE is Melbourne’s newest and, perhaps, most awkward gallery. Located in the toilet hallway of Kings ARI, curators Lyndal May Stewart and Madé Spencer-Castle have found a creative use for a previously overlooked back corner.

The space itself is little more than a wall and, because of the size of the hallway, the works are viewed from a scant half-metre away. While confronting, this also encourages an intimate exchange between the work and the viewer that is hard to come by in traditional galleries.

NEONSALON (the gallery’s first and current exhibition) emphasises the traditional ‘salon’ hanging style where works are placed all over the wall with a few high enough to encourage you to crane your neck and immerse yourself among the light and colour.

The intimate space is difficult and can be confronting, but that’s half the point. Any new space for presenting art is a welcome one, but DUDSPACE is offering artists the room (or lack thereof) to push their own boundaries and those of the spectator.

NEONSALON runs until April 27th.
