Jim Breuer: The Every-Man

Comedian Jim Breuer’s wit is palpable even in the written word. Sent from the other side of the world, while ‘being harassed by his 7 and 10 year old daughters’, it is clear this guy loves life, its universal themes and finding humour in the everyday.

In his own words, Breuer’s life provides him with creative inspiration, ‘Living my life is easy to find material. It just happens. I have an elderly mother, blind in one eye, that recently left my dad at 85 years of age. My father (WW2 vet, 89 years old) lives with me, my wife and three daughters. If I can’t find comedy in just this circle for the rest of my life, then I need to pack it up!’

Currently one of the top touring comedians in the US, Breuer has been a cast member on Saturday Night Live, has published books and hosts his own radio show. He likes how the different formats allows him greater expression, ‘My radio show allows me to speak freely and I don’t have to rely on being hilarious or very funny ALL the time…However the instant feedback of stand up is the ultimate rush for me.”

The appeal of comedy to Breuer is its universal nature, ‘Next to music it’s the only natural healer and it can connect people from all walks of life. Everyone desires a good laugh.’ Breuer’s comedy has been called multigenerational, appealing to all ages. According to Breuer, this is ‘Mostly because I have always been the guy who never committed to a certain crowd, yet spent time with all of them.’

What appeals to Breuer is material that is moving to people, which inspires him to talk about it. But don’t expect controversial content for the sake of it in his upcoming Australian tour, ‘I’m not political. I’m not a one-liner. I talk about a subject that I have lived to tell…I’m hoping this tour will be the beginning of building a great relationship with me and my brand new Aussie fan base that will last the rest of my life. I’m really looking forward to being there and doing well!”

Jim Breuer plays at RMIT Capitol Theatre on April 20 – 22 as part of the Melbourne International Comedy Festival.
