South African artist William Kentridge has been hailed as one of the most interesting artists on the world scene. He is well known for his stop motion films of charcoal drawings. After wowing audiences in San Francisco, New York, Paris, Vienna, Jerusalem and Moscow, the exhibition William Kentridge: Five Themes has reached its final destination at ACMI. The exhibition includes over 60 works, including animations, drawings and prints, theatre models, sculpture and books.

Be sure to check out The Nose, Kentridge’s version of the Dmitri Shostakovich opera, based on Nikolai Gogol’s absurdist short story of 1836. Anton Chekhov described The Nose as the greatest short story ever written and Kentridge says, ‘My belief in what one can learn from the absurd … is very much related to growing up in South Africa where you had the apartheidism, which is both about evil, but also about a crazy logic, an absurd logic.’

WHEN: Until 27 May
WHERE: ACMI, Federation Square
