The Spiegeltent Returns

The Grand Final, MIFF, the Melbourne Cup: these are the things that city relies upon to know the world is turning. Another one of these is The Spiegeltent. After a long spell running from November through summer, the famous mirrored tent is now an autumnal affair.

Parked in a prime pozzie outside The Arts Centre, The Spiegeltent rolls back its red velvet curtains today, and over the next two months it’ll be the place to see over hundreds of acts covering cabaret, music, theatre and circus.

International acts include Canada’s La Vie and the adults-only panto Fat Swan. Locally Graveyard Train and  Tex Perkins will be some of the many dropping by to say g’day.

This year the tent’s introducing Jazz High Tea Sundays, while after hours Club Spiegel will return for those wanting to shake their tail feather (stick around long enough and Australian of the Year Geoffrey Rush is bound to tear up the dance floor). And if that’s not enough there’s a tram that’s really a bar next door and Comedy Festival’s taking over the place in April.

There’s a lot going on in the tent Marlene Dietrich once performed in. I think she’d be proud.

The Spiegeltent runs from Feb 7 until April 22
