The Owl & the Pussycat’s New Bar, Festival of Frothy, Occupy Melbourne, Demon Guitars & Camberwell Market this Weekend!

Raising the Bar
Two years is a long time when you’re a gallery/theatre/bar in Melbourne, and the Owl and the Pussycat has crammed a lot into its first 730 days. They’ve opened The Runcible Spoon Theatre, been part of Fringe, had people in bear suits dancing upstairs and a near roof collapse during a recent performance. To celebrate turning two the Owl’s launching The Woods, their brand spanking new bar. There promises to be “art, music, booze, performance, fun, hilarity, and a bit of blackboard banter.” If you’re lucky there might even be pin the tail on the donkey.

Festival of the Frothy
Speaking of birthdays and booze, The Crafty Pint also happens to be turning one this weekend. As one of the best beer blogs going around, Crafty’s celebrating its first year with, fittingly enough, a delicious mircobrewed beer or six this Saturday. There’s also trivia, food and cake. It’s the Festival of the Frothy. Tickets are $65 a pop or $500 for a table of eight. Booking are a must as the pint glass is nearly full.

Occupy Melbourne
Over the last few weeks the Occupy Wallstreet movement has been gaining momentum around the globe. What starting with a bunch of people sick of corporate greed peacefully demonstrating outside Wall Street has grown into something more. NY Times columnist Nicholas Kristof has compared the movement to the early days of the Arab Spring. While not all may agree with this analogy there’s not denying the movement has struck a chord and similar protests are now taking around the world. This weekend the movement comes to Melbourne, with the sit-in starting at in the City Square from 10am. They’ll be workshops, perhaps a singalong or two then people will start camping. No, it’s not part of Melbourne Festival, and where it ends up is anyone’s guess.

Demon Guitars & Gutter Balls
This Sunday sees the first awesomely titled Demon Rock Off Guitar Competition at Rockstar Bowling. Entrants will be picking, plucking and hip-thrusting in front of punters and a judge called The Devil (who’s just come from touring with Justin Bieber and presumably knows a thing or two about hellish experiences). There”ll be prizes, glory, probably some big hair and bowling too. The Dude would approve.

To Market, To Market
There isn’t a more wholesome way to start off your Sunday than a visit to Camberwell Market. That is unless you go after 10.30am when the place becomes clogged like John Candy’s arteries, you can’t move and end up getting stuck in-between a screaming child and a pan flute busker playing Simon & Garfunkel. But if you go early you’re liable to pick up anything from an old He-Man toy to a vintage suit and a stuffed duck. There’s food vans with donuts and bad coffee that’s all part of the fun. Get in early, get out and go back to bed.
