Shout the Horn on World Food Day

This World Food Day (Sunday October 16) is a chance to sample Melbourne’s culinary delights while contributing to the Africa food crisis relief effort.

Restaurants across Australia have paired up with Oxfam to raise desperately needed funds to assist the 12 million people who face starvation across the Horn of Africa. Oxfam — an organisation that provides over three million people with food, water and sanitation — has created Shout the Horn Day in response to the devastating food crisis that has swept Ethiopia, Somalia, Kenya and Djibouti.

This Sunday people are encouraged to eat at participating restaurants and to donate an amount above the bill total to support Oxfam, with some restaurants also contributing donations per customer sale. Donations will assist many aspects of the relief effort such as providing families with hygiene kits to protect them from disease, supplying communities with essential food packs and installing essential water services in refugee camps.

Northsiders can enjoy the diverse cuisine of restaurants such as Anada, Bebida, Don Vincenzo, Grumpy’s Green, Nyala African Restaurant and The Panama Dining Room. And if you happen to be checking out a gig at The Espy on Sunday why not swing by Big Mouth on Acland for a bite beforehand?

In the city places like Taxi Dining Room, Cumulus Inc. and Collin’s Quarter will be waiting to take your order, while Rural Victoria has also got on board. If your leisurely Sunday drive takes you beyond the burbs Coldstream’s Bella Vedere and the Warburton Pantry will be there to collect donations.

If you prefer home-style cooking then invite a bunch of mates over to share a roast or a spicy stir-fry. On behalf of Oxfam you can pass around a hat and ask guests to donate what they’d spend on the meal if they dined out — it’s easy to register online.

This weekend you can help raise funds for this worthy cause while wining and dining with friends. Bon Appetit!
