St. Jerome’s Second Coming
It might have taken them 3 years instead of 3 days, but Jerome Borazio and Danny Rogers are finally opening their much-anticipated new bar this weekend in the spirit of St Jerome’s called, appropriately enough, The Resurrection. Sitting on the East Brunswick end of Lygon St, The Resurrection will feature the same toasted sangers, longnecks and (presumably) hipster-crowd that made the first St. Jerome’s such a hit. There’s a decent sized beer garden that’ll have barbies in summer plus a new cocktail in the works that promises “to change late night drinking in Melbourne forever”. Bottoms up.

Hair Raising
The Lifted Brow is a bi-monthly Melbourne magazine which has been publishing fiction, art, comics and commentary since 2007. They transcend the aspiration to occupy the perineal territory between Frankie and The Monthly to create something which is both beautiful, clever and accessible. This Friday they’re launching their latest. $12 on the door gets you a copy of the mag and entry to see bands including Clue to Kalo, Jessica Says and Hissy Loco in the back room.

GRUG!
I, like many people who grew up in the 80’s, have fond memories of Grug – the strange haystack looking creature and genius who evolved from the top of a Burrawong tree. After a 32 year wait I’m quite excited that Windmill Theatre has finally brought Grug to life in an fairly awesome puppetry show. Now yes, it is aimed at ages 1-5 and children, but the young at heart can attend too. Encompassing stories from texts like Grug and His Garden and Grug Goes Fishing, The Grug Show is playing at The Arts Centre till Saturday (Aug 12 & 13 author Ted Prior will be around after the show for a chat and if you ask nicely he might even autograph your favourite Grug book.)

Thin Air
Not that long ago multiple radio stations were going ape shit over Adalita Srsen’s debut album. ‘Hot Air’ was being played nonstop and tickets to see her perform where as minimal as the stark production on the album itself, a production that leaves the perfect amount of space for each crystalline note to hang in the air before evaporating like smoke. Although her first show at The Northcote Social Club has sold out there are still tickets available to the August 14 gig, but be quick as they’re sure to disappear soon.

Romeo & Juliet Rebooted
If one of my mates said to me “Hey you’ve got to head to The National Theatre at 10am and take a seat with a bunch of High School students and see Bell Shakespeare’s new Romeo & Juliet, it’s set in a small town in outback Australia during a drought and it’s great” I’d probably laugh at in his face. I don’t expect you to believe me, but I went myself and it was fantastic. Bell’s newly assembled crack team of travelling actors, The Players, perform this pared-down version of The Bard’s moody romance specially for school groups, but anyone with an afternoon free and a fondness for quatrains can attend. And really what else are you doing at 10am or 1pm?
