Bourne Local: The newest market in Collingwood

In a class by itself, Bourne Local has launched a new weekend marketplace that is fun, cool and capable. In residence at the former Honda showroom site at 21–53 Hoddle Street, the artisan market offers punters a grungy Collingwood experience complete with table tennis, retro roller disco, decent coffee and a plethora of fashion, arts and crafts, and crystals. Vroom, vroom, baby!

Held on the last Sunday of every month, the Collingwood Market features local artists, musicians, local produce, gin, continental sweets and delicacies, and gourmet food trucks. The big drawcard of the artisan market is that it is totally indoors – except for the very short walk between the elevator landing on level 1 to the roller disco/table tennis/bar section – making it a winter weather-proof space.

Milk Bar visited the first market held on Sunday 31 July and was impressed by the offering. The artisan market generated a buzzing, eager crowd, with courageous participants lapping up the roller disco offering, injuries be damned. For those who err on the side of caution, table tennis is a safer – albeit a more competitive – option. Be quick to secure those because there are only four tables available.

Each market is constructed around a theme. For July, it was winter, so we were treated to mulled wine. Food options are terrific and bound to please most. There are calamari, souvlaki, crispy chicken and vegan bao and crêpes. Rollies Doughnuts and En Casa provide excellent baked goods.

En Casa is an artisanal bakery offering sweet, homemade Latin American (mostly Argentinian) treats made from the finest premium ingredients without GMOs, artificial flavourings, colouring or perspectives. For me, the White Chocolate and Walnut and the Dark Chocolate Alfajores are hard to pass up!

Beyond the food, the stalls feature a curated selection of the best homegrown Victorian eco-conscious fashion, accessories, home décor, beauty products and artwork.

The Collingwood Market offers fun for all, whether it’s a group of mates, loved-up couples or families. With an enjoyable atmosphere, delicious food and drink options, and leisure, mark every last Sunday on the calendar with a trip to the market.

Doors open 11 am to 4:30 pm. Entry is free.
