Harley Manifold’s INFINITY

Cardboard boxes, ordinarily, are just that. But Brunswick-based artist, Harley Manifold casts new light on aesthetically ordinary locales, such as these in his INFINITY collection—a range of work featuring paintings, sculptures and prints.

Manifold’s works comment on our cyber-impaired, and aided efforts to connect.

You may not see them initially, but there’s a box or two lurking in a passageway or perched on the side of a railway track, legs protruding.

The cardboard box itself is the perfect form to blend into the city, but a small glow can be detected shining out from under the cardboard walls. The inhabitants are on their smart phones–particularly pertinent to the ‘Facebook generation’.

“Art is all about intersecting dichotomies that blur in the meeting of each other,” says Manifold.

He communicates these oppositions by contrasting light and dark, warm and cool, soft and rough. People – their interactions with and within their surroundings – provide infinite inspiration.

The three-time Metro Art Award finalist has held numerous solo and group exhibitions across the country, and describes his relationship with art as “a difficult, passionate relationship with a person– it’s never dull.”

INFINITY runs from Feb 19 – March 9, at the No Vacancy Gallery
34-40 Jane Bell Lane, Melbourne VIC 3000
