The 33rd Alliance Française French Film Festival is in full swing at participating Palace Cinemas across Melbourne. Brimming with compelling drama, sumptuous romance and absurd comedy, the aim of the 2021 programme is to offer audiences a moment to breathe, and a little bit of an escape. This year’s choice of 37 feature films is sure to have something for everyone discerning cinephile and self-proclaimed Francophile. Milk Bar has handpicked some of our favourites.

The film to close the Melbourne leg of the festival is #Iamhere. Starring Alain Chabat, Doona Bae and Blanche Gardin, the romantic comedy focuses on a man navigating a middle-life crisis, and upon a bond formed with a woman from Korea on Instagram, decides to fly to Seoul and meet her.

Isabelle Huppert fans can exclaim an oui as she graces the screens in the beautifully crafted The Godmother. In what can be described as France’s answer to Breaking Bad, the film charts Huppert’s characters journey from police interpreter to narcotic drug kingpin. Entertaining from the get-go, the comedy drama is layered with a heartfelt story of female empowerment, and a woman’s devotion to her family.

Summer of 85 is the saccharine romantic drama that will make you swoon. Channelling some serious Call Me by Your Name vibes, the Cannes-selected film focuses on teenage boy Alexis (Félix Lefebrve) and his ill-fated best friend David (Benjamin Voisin) charting their thrilling and hotblooded tale of Alexis’ infatuation with David, which went from friendship to love to obsession.

Tipped to be a standout and a movie that will win hearts is Ruben Alves’ feature titled Miss. The feel-good flick is based on a boy who overcomes hardship and prejudice as he competes in a beauty pageant while also providing commentary on how attitudes towards gender are shaped.

To celebrate the return of the French Film Festival, Milk Bar is giving away 10 FREE double passes. All you need to is email ross@milkbarmag.com with the subject line ‘French Film Festival ticket giveaway’ and include your name, your postal address and the film you will love to watch.

Bonne chance!
