Fishlace Jones in Behind the Curtain

Who is Fishlace Jones? Some say he has written, produced and starred in well over 130 one-man productions since the tender age of three. Others believe he coined the phrase “one-seat theatre”. To many – including William Shakespeare, apparently – he is known as Melbourne’s King of Independent Theatre. This year’s Melbourne Fringe Festival summons Fishlace Jones to the stage at Belleville in front of an intimate audiences in the new show Behind the Curtain.

Part masterclass, part boot camp (of sorts), Fishlace (Charlie Ranger) taps in on the crazy, absurd and questionable methods an actor goes through to create theatre, including ones you’ll see at Fringe. Voyeurs can delight knowing I was one of the unlucky ducks that was called upon by the great Fishlace himself. Guided to let the ‘actor Ross’ emerge, Fishlace describes that it is essential to trust oneself in order to find one’s emotional truth. Was it a little bit of an ‘oh oh’ moment? Maybe. Will I pursue an acting career? Please direct all enquiries my agent.

Upbeat, fresh and boisterous, the one-man show is quite entertaining, and is a testament to Ranger’s acting ability and charisma. Charlie Ranger is no stranger to the art scene, and the creative team behind Behind the Curtain, have performed at Melbourne Fringe Festival for the past three years. If you have missed Ranger this year, you can catch him on his show, Up Late With Charlie Ranger, on YouTube.

Whether you are on-stage eating a fishy sandwich as part of an acting lesson, or sitting in the crowd, Fishlace Jones will impart his personal experiences for the good of us – and humankind.
