One, two, Alhbom’s coming for you …

Watch as your most bloodcurdling nightmares come to life in Horror. Jakop Ahlbom’s dark creative passion is actualised in this piece of theatre, playing homage to the horror genre.  Horror combines the use of mime, music, magic, humour and special effects to create something Australia has never seen before. For five nights only, Horror takes audiences through nightmarish squirms and screams.

Before you read on: “What’s your favourite scary movie?”

Since Alhbom was a child, he has been a big fan of all things horror. He loves the classics and some of his favourites include: Peter Jackson’s Braindead, Sam Raimi’s The Evil Dead and of course, Kubrick’s masterpiece, The Shining. Alhbom forever wondered if his eye for the genre could be transported to the stage.

Swedish-born Alhbom is an acclaimed physical theatre creator and has formed many works. In 2000, Alhbom started working with his company on works including Stella Maris (2000) then continued with Nur zur Erinnerung (2002), Lost (2004), Vielfalt (2006), De Architect (2008), Innenschau (2010), Lebensraum (2012), Het Leven een Gebruiksaanwijzing (2013), Bug (2014), Swan Lake (2016) and Innenschau [Revisited] (2018).”

Getting Horror up and running is a testament to the hard-working team. “We have a wonderful cast and crew, who are doing a wonderful job during this Australian tour. My cooperation with music designer Wim Condradi, set designer Douwe Hibma and lighting designer Yuri Schreuders [is] very important for the creation of this show,” says Alhbom.

With the inspiration taken from the big screen, Alhbom’s innovation and creativity conceived a different take on the genre altogether. Horror fanatics will get a taste of their favourites, while the show won’t be too scary for those who have tagged along.  For true fans of the genre, expect references to the classic hair raisers, such as The ShiningRosemary’s Baby and The Exorcist.

“Fans of horror will enjoy a lot of references to their (and my) favourite movies and I hope they will get some chills down their spines, but you will be able to sleep at night,” preview Alhbom.

Horror channels the thrills within the genre of the same name with a twisted and innovative take. Alhbom is thrilled to be bringing his creative work to the eyes of the Australians. He is grateful for the “wonderful opportunity to bring the performance to Australia, and [the cast and crew] love meeting this beautiful country and the Aussies.”

Horror is showing at the Arts Centre Melbourne from September 18 to 22. It will be “an excellent day for an exorcism.”
