Promising talent Velvet Bloom glimmered through their performance at The Toff in Town on Saturday 11 June. Playing in front of an intimate audience, the five-piece headed by the captivating and uber-talented frontwoman Maddy Herbert, belted out their latest EP Glimmer, a follow-up to the 2021 silky soul jam ‘Run’.

The Melbourne-based group see Glimmer as a shiny and ethereal serving of indie soul and R&B delights. The titular song ‘Glimmer’ is an instant hit with strong vocals, a refined velvety sound, and a mix of funk and smooth grooves. For Maddy Herbert, the song is an ode to motherhood, family and divine femininity.

‘I wrote ‘Glimmer’ about my relationship with my mother and how much she inspires me. My dad passed away when I was four and the strength that I saw in my mum following this loss helped to shape my entire being. This song is about expressing admiration for the people who you love and making them aware of how special they are. Some people have a major influence on the way you see the world and if that influence is positive – you should hold them close,’ surmises Maddy Herbert.

This beautiful sentiment flows through the heartfelt lyrics and the breathtaking aesthetic of the music clip. Herbert’s commanding presence, corsets, native foliage, mirrors and a velvet red backdrop juxtaposed with live footage of the band work in harmony to create an aura of shimmery intimacy.

Beyond ‘Glimmer’, the standouts of the EP are ‘Chance to Miss You’ and ‘Free’. Definitely add these to your Spotify playlist.

Backed by live band members Alex Marko, Anthony Rennick, Miguel Hutton and Nick Morton, and backing vocals from Quin Gruden and Bridie English, Velvet Bloom is easily building a devoted fan base. We can’t wait to see what they’re up to next!

Somewhere Else video sings of summer

It almost sounds like the premise of a reality TV show: pile a bunch of artists in a bus for seven days, send them across Mexico and see what happens.
