Go north this grizzly winter and warm the cockles of your heart and soul with the very best of Scandinavian cinema. That’s right – the Scandinavian Film Festival is back at select Palace Cinemas in Melbourne from now till Wednesday 28 July! This year’s superb curation of Nordic films will no doubt dazzle, entice and intoxicate you. Milk Bar is here to pick out the winners from the programme, so strap in and let’s do this.

This year’s programme encompasses films from Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden, with many screening for the first time outside of Europe. Our top pick is Wildland. Containing all the elements of a quintessential Nordic noir, the festival opener follows a teenage girl and her guardianship with her estranged aunt, who happens to be the head of a family crime syndicate. This one will be sure to shock you.

Next up is The Emigrants. The Academy Award-nominated film traces the steps of a struggling farming family in mid-19th Century Sweden who decide to embark on the arduous journey to the States. Starring the late Max von Sydow and Liv Ullmann, the monumental epic depicts the immense physical and emotional trials of moving across the globe.

Games People Play looks fantastic. It’s Finnish. It’s set at an idyllic seaside villa. It showcases an ensemble of beauties. What more could one ask for? This comedy about the tragedy of being forever young, sees eight friends gathering to celebrate Mitzi’s (Emmi Parviainen) surprise birthday. Old rivalries ignite, secrets emerge, and revelations are aplenty. Here. For. It.

A Swedish box office hit, A Piece of My Heart is a playful musical comedy starring Malin Akerman. Reminiscent of 27 Dresses, the story focuses on career-driven Isabella in Stockholm who priorities finance over relationship. When she returns to her childhood home, she reunites with her teen love Simon (Christian Hillborg, Fleabag) and learns he is to be wed thus triggering unresolved feelings. The musical is joyously performed and is the perfect choice for romantics at heart.

Tove is a captivating biopic that looks at the formative decade in the life of Finnish visual artist and author, Tove Jansson, creator of the Moomins. Set in 1945 Helsinki, the post-war atmosphere is filled with dizzying parties, modern art and dramatic love affairs. As Tove struggles with her personal life, her creative works take an unexpected turn and focus on the haunting, melancholic tales she told scared children in bomb shelters. The Moomins catch on, bringing Tove financial freedom and international fame.
