Melbourne indie-pop group Telenova have unveiled their thrilling new single ‘Bones’. They have released the single alongside the tagline ‘Cinema for Your Ears’ and it is hard to deny that ‘Bones’ brings a particular style to it that is certainly befitting of this tag. The energy and charisma Telenova exudes in ‘Bones’ should come as little surprise as a member of Pointer Recordings. Multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Angeline Armstrong recently heaped praise on the label and its founder Sweetie Zamora regarding ‘the strong, female-led team at Pointer’ that brings ‘a tenacity and loyalty… that’s hard to come by.’
The single showcases the group’s song-writing craft and ability to bring all the excitement required to carry a performance. There is something very sparse and spacious about its sound, as heard through percussion that eerily sounds like the clattering of bones. The show is stolen however by Joshua Moriarty with a powerful bass line that stands at the forefront of the song’s texture.
Telenova extend this charm to the lyrical content of ‘Bones’ as Armstrong laments ‘a life that is tragic for better or worse.’ A sinister streak runs through it as driven by the repeated refrain “Won’t you free me from bones.” Lines like “I was dreaming of blue skies and California” are matched by the somewhat dreamlike feel of the single. Speaking on the creative vision for the song, Armstrong said: ‘We started to envision this elaborate narrative of melancholia and longing, a girl trapped in her own bones…her own disillusionment.’
The single is expertly segmented with a bridge that reinvigorates and ties the song together. Bones’ structure maintains intrigue throughout, never settling comfortably in its own skin. Each segment of the single sounds like its own character and yet they all coalesce into a striking whole. The single release also comes with an edited version that offers a slightly more concise imagining of the tune. This version is markedly punchier in its delivery for a radio audience.
Telenova’s distinct sound translates incredibly well to the live stage. A recent performance at The Night Cat in Melbourne demonstrates their sound in its best form. The minimal three-piece ensemble ensures there is room for each member to shine. Armstrong’s vocals are a clear standout in the studio recording, but in a true testament to her talent she sounds even better live. If this impassioned performance – along with recent tour of Bones through Sydney and Melbourne is any indication – Telenova have an uncanny ability to please any crowd and electrify any venue. This melody will be rolling around in your mind for the rest of your day at the very least.
