Lean into the cooler autumnal weather and keep toasty at the 2021 Moro Spanish Film Festival. Screening at selected Palace Cinemas in Melbourne until Sunday 9 May, cinephiles can marvel at the blockbuster line-up of film that celebrates the Spanish and Latino language, culture and art. Milk Bar is here to dish up our favourite choices and help you navigate the programme.

This year, choose from 29 films in either the Reel Español or Reel Latino programme strands. Internationally acclaimed director Alejandro Amenábar (The Sea Inside) returns with his masterpiece, While at War, an exposé of the 1936 Spanish Coup. Intelligent, moving and compelling, it is a film that showcases a nation divided by competing visions of how Spain can be ‘great again’. Sound familiar?

The delicious dark comedy The Plan focuses on three unemployed friends who find themselves trapped in a small apartment where secrets surface, setting in motion a drama that is at times both tragic and outrageous.

Cast your mind back to 1950s Ibiza as best friends Miguel (Raúl Arévalo) and Antonio (Juan Diego Botto) swap their mundane life in Madrid for an adventure in The Europeans. The drama romance is captivating due to the electricity of the two lead actors set against the dazzle of the Mediterranean island party.

In the Reel Latino strand, director Andrés Wood’s Spider is tipped to be a winner. Selected as the Chilean entry for Best International Feature Film at the Academy Awards, the historical thriller weaves together two separate timelines. One focuses on a gang of radicals that are mobilised into political action in a right-wing Nationalist group that saw the violent ousting of Salvador Allende in 1973. The other jumps to the present-day where the surviving members have taken different paths – some remain obsessed with the perceived injustices, while others fight to forget the past.
