‘night, Mother

Presented by Iron Lung Theatre, ‘night, Mother is the compelling new stage play to keep an eye out for. On stage at Chapel Off Chapel from Wednesday, 7 to Saturday, 17 August, the show is the turbulent tale of a mother–daughter relationship rocked to the core by the daughter’s admission that she intends to kill herself that evening.
Milk Bar anticipates two powerful portrayals from tremendous duo, Melbourne-theatre royalty Caroline Lee and TV, film and stage actor Jessie Cates. Lee is known in the circuit for standout performances in Red Stitch Actors Theatre’s Suddenly Last Summer, Colder and personal favourite Rules for Living. For those who loved true blue Aussie dramas from the early 00s, you may recognise Cates from shows such as Water Rats or All Saints.
Winner of the 1983 Pulitzer Prize, ‘night, Mother is a devastating exploration of love, quiet savagery and chocolate by acclaimed playwright Marsha Norman. Here’s a quick rundown of the 90-minute show: On an ordinary Saturday night, daughter Jess tells her mother, Thelma, “I’m going to kill myself”, triggering one last chance for absolute honesty between mother and daughter. As the clock ticks down to a gripping conclusion, is there enough time talk Jess off the ledge?
Hailed as “winning drama” by New York Times and “a complex emotional seesaw” by Chicago Tribune, we hope the Australian audiences find this adaptation just as riveting.
