Jess Ribeiro is a Melbourne musician who, while you all have been living your lives, has been writing the soundtrack. Her new music, released three years after her last album Kill it Yourself features a new band, and a refined sound. The single, ‘Love is the Score of Nothing’ produced by Ben Edwards (who has also worked with song-writing powerhouse, Marlon Williams), is an expression of playful nihilism. It is relevant and grounded, and not least of all, danceable.

The lyrics possess a quiet brevity and insightfulness. Despite the nihilistic tone, there is a freedom and liberation inherent in having nothing left to lose, an ethos explored in the track. Much like ‘Nico’ (The Velvet Underground), there is distinct pride in her delivery, leaving the impression you’re hearing something very personal. It’s of a faster pace than her previous album, but far from detracting from the emotional import, it compels you along with her.

Ribeiro’s last album is an award-winning songwriting endeavour; each of her songs is a harmonious and powerful marriage between lyrics and music. It is urgent, despite being so considered. This new single similarly, shows a comfortable sense of self. Her singing style is confident, and much like Mazzy Star or Cat Power, her patient and assured story-telling commands thought and attention. Released with a new, stylistic music video, Ribeiro’s return and the impending release of a new album should delight music fans. The production and musicianship of the track is great, each instrument weaving together to create a dream-like tapestry upon which Ribeiro embroiders her unique experience with love held and lost.

Jess Ribeiro is currently touring Australia, bringing her new music to a selection of venues the length of the East Coast. She is an artist you would be foolish to miss.

It almost sounds like the premise of a reality TV show: pile a bunch of artists in a bus for seven days, send them across Mexico and see what happens.
