Big Cans @ Burnley Brewing

Richmond’s infamous Brewpub and Tap House, Burnley Brewing, claims to provide bold and distinctive beers for forward drinkers. Through their flagship Pale Ale and Vienna Lager, now available in a larger-than-life 440ml can, the future is now.

Opening in late 2017, The Burnley is designed to be everyone’s local. Neil Mills and Phil Gijsber, two former university pals, are the masterminds who collaborated with Renton Carlyle-Taylor in transforming what was once a popular Italian restaurant into the beer connoisseurs mecca we bare witness today.

‘Quality first’, the guarantee of Burnley Brewing is prevalent throughout its cascading range of beer styles brewed in-house and served straight from the brite tanks, and each of the 14 taps featuring an exclusively Burnley Brewed Beer. Head Brewer, Michael Stanzel, completed his Brewer and Malster apprenticeship at Ferdinand-von-Steinbeis-Schule in Germany, otherwise known as the motherland of all things beer. An expert in the field, he was brewing before he was legally allowed to drink. “When I was 16, I won this home-brew competition,” Stanzel says. “I couldn’t accept the award, so I got my dad to.”

Utilising Stanzel’s expertise in brewing, according to German Purity Law and with beers of only four ingredients, the Vienna Lager is complex and an absolute cracker. “Our flagship Pale Ale is absolutely the people’s choice. We have been pouring this at the brewpub since day one and the feedback has been amazing. We never thought the demand for our Pale would be so high,” says Mills.

The inception of the larger can (440ml) is all about convenience. Mills understands and empathises with the frustrations of all the hard-working, parched individuals who are forced to trudge back and forth to the fridge after a long day. The striking cans, designed by Miriam McWilliam of Studio Mimi Moon, are modern with vibrant pastel colours partnered with Burnley Brewing’s signature navy and pink. A perfect accompaniment for all the picnics, beach chills and friyay drinks! It’s 5 o’clock somewhere, right?

Burnley Brewing’s Vienna Lager and Pale Ale are available in 440ml individual cans or 4-packs at McCoppins and Blackhearts & Sparrows stores as well as Far Side Beers in Hawthorn, Eastern Road Larder in South Melbourne and Decanters by the Bay in Port Melbourne.

Burnley Brewing’s brewpub is open 7 days, serving hand rolled pastas, pizzas, beer snacks and main meals until late. Free brewery tours run each Monday and in-house brewing can be viewed most Thursdays from midday.
