The NGV has opened its doors to celebrate 130 years of modern art in collaboration with The Museum of Modern Art, New York City. As part of the gallery’s Melbourne Winter Masterpieces, don’t miss your chance to view 230 works of modern and contemporary art.

The unparalleled collections consists of eight stations to tell the modern art story shaped by 20th- and 21st-century influences. Think Henri Matisse, René Magritte, Pablo Picasso, Jackson Pollock, Marcel Duchamp, Vincent van Gogh, Frida Kahlo, Mark Rothko and any other inspiring artist you can think of.

With pops of colour and many acclaimed artworks to appreciate, the NGV has truly outdone themselves in serving up this spectacular exhibition. Melbourne was fortunate enough to have MoMA’s director, Glenn Lowry, to tell us about some of his favourites. “You can spend hours in this room and not even begin to discover the many different threads of minimalism, post minimalism, conceptualism, pop,” he muses.

The works provided are drawn from MoMA’s six departments: architecture and design, drawings and prints, film, media and performance art, painting and sculpture and photography.

The exhibition will be the largest in The Winter Masterpieces collection, taking over the entire ground level of the NGV, and while you wander, you will witness an ever-increasing presence of diverse representations of culture and expressions of gender. Art enthusiasts are in for a treat, as half of the works being housed by the NGV have never left MoMA before!

From Salvador Dali to Andy Warhol, Melbourne has been blessed in exhibiting some of the world’s greatest pieces. This modern art collection, generously lent by MoMa, is to be housed in the NGV till Sunday, 7 October.

Somewhere Else video sings of summer

It almost sounds like the premise of a reality TV show: pile a bunch of artists in a bus for seven days, send them across Mexico and see what happens.
