Roulston & Young: Songs for Lovers (and Other Idiots)

The Butterfly Club hosts a plethora of cabarets and shows weekly. I was lucky enough to catch Songs for Lovers (and other Idiots) bought to us by London Cabaret legends Sarah Young and Michael Roulston. Their show is a tight, bright and highly hilarious ode to lovers, whatever shape or form they take, and the foolish things we do for love. With Roulston on the piano, the duo delighted us with song after song of their originals; which are melodically contrasting and full of lyrics that had the audience hooting and laughing.

Beginning with an opening number that had great punchy energy and a brilliant key change, their witty British banter had the audience on board within minutes. People were whooping and giving the right kind of heckles, which the experienced artists took and ran with, giving the show a real sense of spontaneity. We are introduced to the couple — well, not a romantic couple, and the array of experiences in the love department they have had. They have a wonderful way of articulating some of the horrors that we have all been through, and making a laugh out of it all.

The pace was perfect. There were some heartfelt moments that Young truly showed some vulnerability, using comedy as a contrast to some deep ideas. Whilst the songs had some hilarious lyrics, some of the rhyme schemes were a touch predictable, yet the delivery was bang on. The honesty the show contains makes it stand out, giving us something to take away. Both looked glamourous and classy, dressed in suit and gown, and lit well by Nathan, The Butterfly Club’s sound and lighting technician.

For friends, lovers, first date, and long enduring couples, or to go solo, this is the perfect show. It had me beaming and toe tapping from start to finish, loving every note and every word. Catch these brilliant experienced artists who you can tell it’s a joy to share their craft and comedy with us.
