Melbourne Queer Film Festival

The Melbourne Queer Film Festival turns twenty-seven this year and has grown to become Australia’s largest queer film festival. Screening at ACMI, Kino Cinemas and Cinema Nova, the 2017 programme is groundbreaking, gritty and explores queer issues, both past and present, featuring films from thirty countries, including documentaries and short films.

At its core, the film festival celebrates the LGBTIQ community. ‘Despite societal developments, the LGBTIQ community is still fighting for rights as evidenced by debates both locally and internationally over the last year. It feels more important than ever that we welcome to show queer screen content and bring the community together,’ says MQFF Executive Director Dillan Golightly.

This weekend’s highlights include Our Love Story, a Korean film following art student Yoon-ju and bartender Ji-soo that explores the pressures of modern relationship in an authentic and realistic light; Suicide Kale, a quirky dark comedy following Jasmine and Penny who discover an unsigned suicide note in their friends’ bedroom; or Tomcat — the movie that stunned audiences at the Berlin Film Festival — following happily committed couple Andreas and Stefan.

The MQFF will end on a high screening the acclaimed Women Who Kill, a twisted dark comedy and psychological thriller, starring the talented Ingrid Jungermann. Winner of the Jury Prize for Best Screenplay at the 2016 Tribeca Film Festival, the film follows the story of commitment-phobic Morgan (Jungermann) and her ex-girlfriend Jean, both true-crime podcasters, who suspect Morgan’s new girlfriend is a murderer.

Dare to be proudly different this weekend and enjoy a flick!

Somewhere Else video sings of summer

It almost sounds like the premise of a reality TV show: pile a bunch of artists in a bus for seven days, send them across Mexico and see what happens.
