Free State of Jones traces the history of Jones County, Mississippi, during the final stages of the Civil War and immediately thereafter. Knight, an army medic privy to the harsh realities of war, returns to protect his family after the death of his nephew on the battlefield, only to discover that he has been declared an outlaw by the Confederate Army.

Fleeing for his life, Knight finds safety living in swamps and meeting a community of runaway slaves. Forming an alliance with other poor farmers, Knight becomes the figurehead of rebellion, successfully leading an uprising that results in the secession of Jones County.

For history buffs, it is important to discern the fictional plot from the factual events, but for everyone else, Free State of Jones is packed with blaring canons, battle scenes and high-stakes action.
