Do you need some refuge from the deluge? The 2019 German Film Festival kicked off over the weekend and thus, it is your perfect wet-day-timetable activity. Screening at various participating Palace Cinemas in Melbourne till Sunday, 9 June, the festival features a hand-picked selection of 31 of the finest Deutsche flicks

Here is Milk Bar’s guide to the 2019 German Film Festival:

Writer–director Robert Schwentke (The Time Traveler’s Wife, RED) returns to German cinema with The Captain, the black-and-white masterpiece following the final days of World War II. Based on a true story, the darkly evocative and brutally stark film follows 19-year-old private Willi Herold (Max Hubacher) who deserts the army sparking a fight for survival that he has never encountered.

Adam & Evelyn is the charming and quirky romantic film that is set in the disintegrating East Germany of 1989. Based on the popular novel by Ingo Schultz, the titular characters’ relationship falls into disarray when Evelyn realises Adam is cheating on her. Deciding to live her best life, she scuttles off to Hungary. Once it becomes apparent that their country is about to fall, they are faced with a bigger problem than their fractured relationship: do they stay in the East or make a new life in the West?

Taking the Best Film gong at the 2018 Zurich Film Awards, Midnight Runner is a methodical portrait of toxic masculinity, inspired by the true story of the “midnight murderer” who made headlines in the 1990s. Starring Max Hubacher (again!) as Jonas Widmer – a celebrated long-distance runner with eyes to race at the Olympics – it follows his journey from text-book overachiever to creepy serial attacker. Suspenseful and very eerie to say the least!
