You may not have noticed but the 2019 Moro Spanish Film Festival has Fandango-ed to a Palace Cinema near you. This year, the blockbuster programme shines the spotlight on provocative female directors and celebrates the very best of cinema from Spain and Latin America. Milk Bar is here to pick out what films you should NOT miss, so, vamaonos!
Closing nights goes off with a bang (and a ball of nerves, maybe) with the iconic Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown. Following Pepa (Carmen Maura), a pregnant woman abandoned by her lover Iván (Fernando Guillén), and her hysterical (and wild) journey to track him down. For the Melbourne leg, closing night is Wednesday, 8 May at The Astor Theatre.
New release, 70 Big Ones, is Koldo Serra’s third feature and is a suspenseful and intriguing ride, jam-packed with action scenes and a sprinkling of black comedy. The premise is simple: Raquel is desperate to rescue her kidnapped daughter and needs a large sum of money. What will she do next?
A March to Remember dials the clock back to 1976. Upon the death of Dictator Francisco Franco, a people’s uprising flares up resulting in a dramatic and bitter conflict between the workers in the city of Vitoria and the local enforcement. Real footage of police recordings and other imagery depict the atrocities and violence in ways you may feel uncomfortable with, but it’s a story that nevertheless needs to be told.
Director Alejandra Márquez Abella presents the gorgeous The Good Girls, a satirical yet glamorous depiction of the wives of upper-class men in 1982 Mexico. The comedy is all high fashion, puffy sleeves, palatial homes and gossip. And we are there for it.
