Away

“It’s everywhere, isn’t it? In the air we breathe.”

Thought-provoking, bold and filled with sadness, Away will have you internally questioning your priorities. Set in 1968 Australia, it follows three families with their own unique versions of trauma. It’s a very Australian play with slang and themes that only Aussies would understand.

Opening with a school performance of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer’s Night’s Dream, it’s the end of the school year and everyone is off on their Christmas holidays. Focusing on three very different trips around Australia and the dynamics of each family, Away incorporates subtle crossovers and explores how these families are connected more than they and the audience thinks.

With each family experiencing their own trauma from the Vietnam War, Away speaks to those who lost friends or family, who experienced immigration and to the generations that followed. It is filled with a vast range of different characters which keeps it engaging. Death is a prominent theme, as all the characters have either experienced death or will in the near future. This play will truly make you think about how you will never know what someone is going through.

Away is a modern classic by renowned writer Michael Gow. Originally written in 1986, it is filled with metaphors that are complemented by a timeless script. It’s incredibly sad and funny at the same time, and after winning countless awards over the years, it has retained its popularity as an ageless tale.

All in all, Away is clever, funny and incredibly moving. You’ll walk away filled with a new outlook on what’s important in life while being immensely entertained.
