The Tempest

‘Hell is empty and all the devils are here.’ Melbourne Shakespeare Company is bringing the bard back to the park, and this time it’s an 80s punk rock fest!

Shakespeare’s The Tempest tells the story of Prospero and his quest for justice. With his dukedom usurped by his own brother and banished to an island with his daughter Miranda, Prospero uses his magic powers to wrangle a spirit of the air, Ariel, and Caliban, the son of the witch who once inhabited the island. One fateful day, a ship brings a company of traitorous devils and Prospero has Ariel create a tempest — a violent storm — to shipwreck those on board and disperse them across the islands, where they are left under his mercy.

Director Chelsea Matheson (Telling Tales), Music Director Benjamin Colley (As You Like It) and Movement Director Tref Gare (The King’s Player) are the team behind this brand-new musical performance. What I love about these productions is that they don’t take Shakespeare too seriously — a school classroom, this is NOT!

The live rock band and performances of hits like ‘Holding Out for a Hero’, ‘It’s Raining Men’ and ‘Final Countdown’ by a talented cast of actor musicians ensures a wholly unique and accessible production. Having said that, unless you’re a Shakespeare aficionado, I’d recommend a quick read of the synopsis after you unpack your picnic basket. It just makes the experience more enjoyable.

Standouts for me include Katherine Pearson as Ariel, who played the untamed spirit with wild abandon (and had the coolest costume and make-up); Michael Sakinofsky as Caliban with their impeccable comedic timing; and Liliana Dalton and Andrew Dang as Miranda and Ferdinand, the adorably awkward young lovers.

The Tempest runs until March 12th in Central Park, Malvern and is recommended for audiences of all ages. Grab tickets below and have a fun romp in the park.

It almost sounds like the premise of a reality TV show: pile a bunch of artists in a bus for seven days, send them across Mexico and see what happens.
