MICF: The Beastie Girls

Fierce, fabulous and fancy, The Beastie Girls are an act of three drag mothers electrifying the stage at the 2022 Melbourne International Comedy Festival (MICF). Serving serious looks, they have the inherent talent to transform an $80 bright yellow ASOS power suit into a symbol of strength, hilarious chaos and wit.

Presented by Rural Ranga, The Beastie Girls is a unique and uproarious drag show that’s also a game show, the type of game show suburbanites would gag over while eating a meal in front of the telly. From their humble origins in 2017, the three queens – Lazy Susan, Zelda Moon and Benign Girl – have charted a path that’s taken them from the gutter to glorious heights of the festival circuit. They come to us hot off the heels of the Adelaide Fringe Festival.

The girls, each divine, use colour as an emblem. Lazy Susan sports a hot yellow number and is the mastermind. Performing as the game host and author of much commotion, she dishes out one-liners, and 50c pieces, with accuracy and comedic timing. There’s Zelda Moon, who is pretty in pink. Zelda has had a journey as a queen and can dodge a P.E. class like no other. Benign Girl is the vision in blue. Unfortunately, the Gold Coast chick was unable to play along on opening night due to a netball mishap. She loves her sports. So, on the night Milk Bar attended, the sub-in was Jandruze, a girl who has a penchant for Rosebud.

The 60-minute (game) show was a battle of supremacy over the rival house. The crowd were divided into two teams, the House of Moon and the House of Jandruze, and were given play cards. The best drag challenges were gay trivia, ‘how much money have you spent on a hook up’, the saddest gay experience and the ‘who can come up with the best read’. The monologues from Zelda Moon and Jandruze were the perfect mix of self-deprivation, delusion and hilarity.

The Beastie Girls is a fun ride for the whole family (except for your homophobic uncle). So, go along, experience the breadth and comedy of drag, because, after all, you won’t want to disappoint your drag mother.
