Brijean are an Oakland-based duo on the verge of releasing a full-length studio album that promises insatiable percussion, stylistic vocals and dynamic instrumentation. Released on Ghostly International, Feelings will be the second studio album from Brijean Murphy and Doug Stuart. The three tracks that have been released so far range from the extremely danceable ‘Day Dreaming’ and ‘Moody’ to their latest single ‘Ocean’, which features intricate Rhodes piano and a gentle, brushed percussion line.

Brijean has worked as a percussionist for indie successes Toro Y Moi, Poolside and U.S. Girls, and her partnership with Stuart since 2018, is a demonstration of her ability to create music holistically. Brijean has found confidence in her songwriting and vocal abilities, as well as value directing collaboration. Feelings itself the distillation of lengthy jams with friends Chaz Bear, Tony Peppers and Hamir Atwal and, as the name might suggest, is intended to inspire gentle introspection. The many percussive instruments used result in rhythmically focused, rich music that complements the vocal tracks of Brijean herself. Her vocals in ‘Ocean’ are committal, and toe the line between an Astrud Gilberto-esque atmosphere, and a sharpness that could grate on and polarise some listeners. It is uncompromising, however, and speaks to the new confidence Brijean creates with.

There are dominant elements of Tropicália in the new project, asserting that this is more than just house music to dance to. The album could easily be enjoyed in a relaxed setting; it is adaptable and holds up well over several listens. The lyrics promote self-exploration, and the slower pace in the recent single, ‘Ocean’, helps outlines the ambition of this project. Doug Stuart and Brijean’s Latin and jazz backgrounds can be heard clearly, bringing delicacy and detail to the music.

Brijean have found a unique sound for themselves, with mature vocals, lyrics and percussive soundscapes. They are establishing themselves as a duo who bring tangible value to any collaboration. Feelings is aiming to be sensitive and considered, and while some may consider the ambition of the dance music to be misplaced, it will deserve a listener’s full attention when released on February 26 2021.

It almost sounds like the premise of a reality TV show: pile a bunch of artists in a bus for seven days, send them across Mexico and see what happens.
