Nestled away in a small corner of the city, with little direction or fanfare, is the latest offering from the Grossi family. Situated just behind the Grossi Florentino dining room, Arlechin is a small, modern and relaxed wine bar in the centre of the CBD.

Named after the archetypal theatrical comic character Harlequin, or Arlechinio , Arlechin is roughly able to seat around forty people and is perfect for a quiet after-dinner drink or a post-work libation. For those lucky enough to stumble down to the end of Mornane Place and spot the modest entrance, inside they will find a narrow and elegant bar, bordered by glass encased walls stored with old and dusty wine bottles and capped with a domed cork ceiling, giving the space an almost subterranean vibe. Once there, allow the sounds and stress of the city to melt away as you peruse the bar’s eclectic menu of wines and classic cocktails.

The wine list itself features predominantly Australian, Italian and French labels while the cocktail menu embraces the stalwart creations such as a Champagne Julep and the Jungle Bird, along with new and inventive concoctions such as the Imperial Special consisting of Italian digestive bitters Amaro Lucano. In regards to food, visitors to Arlechin will be well looked after with a range of bar snacks and desserts, ranging from the hearty to the decadent and including fried quail, Bolognese jaffles and alchermes-soaked custard donuts.

A fine new addition to Melbourne’s vibrant laneway bar scene, Arlechin will sure to delight those looking for a quiet and secluded spot away from prying eyes and the hustle of the city. You just have to find it first.
