Out of Earshot

Out of Earshot is a visual performance like no other. It boldly defies taken-for-granted notions of spoken dialogue or lyrics in a song. Instead, the theatrical production focuses on intense physical prowess and highlights the central role sound plays in human interaction.

Directed by Kate Denborough, the act begins in silent darkness, except for three electrical panels featuring pulsing neon-coloured currents. Next, the sound of tapping engulfs the stage as New Zealand drummer Myele Manzanza begins patting his fellow cast members with rhythmic precision. The patting triggers an intense series of dance performances leading to drumming, and eventually, layer upon layer of different states of sound, movement and penetrating silence, creating something truly unique.

So what does it all mean? The important note to take home is that Out of Earshot studies the social anxiety around silence and the common misconception that communication relies on sound and flips it. Silence – as a state of lacking sound – is reimagined to show how perspectives of passion, empathy, exhilaration and intimacy can be portrayed on stage.

The ensemble team, including Manzanza, Deaf dancer Anna Seymour, Elle Evangelista and Timothy Ohl really give it their all, and must be congratulated for their efforts. Their use of their bodies to develop a physical language that expresses emotion and tell a story is exceptional.

‘In Deaf culture, movement is equivalent to sound. Sound doesn’t have to be something that is only felt through the ears, it can be felt tactually or experienced as a visual,’ says American Deaf visual artist, Christine Sum Kim.

Playing at Chunky Move till Saturday, 10 June, KAGE’s latest collaboration is a tactile and wonderfully ambitious production.

It almost sounds like the premise of a reality TV show: pile a bunch of artists in a bus for seven days, send them across Mexico and see what happens.
