Hello, Dolly!

Hello, Dolly! is an original musical from 1964. It has since been on the Broadway stage many times in many different variations. The essence of Dolly Levi has transpired in film adaptions and Academy Award nominations. The latest incarnation playing at the Arts Centre is full of colour and excitement, and is jam-packed with singing and dancing.

The beautiful Marina Prior fills the stage with charisma and glamour. Her experience and talent during the show shines through the whole performance.  Prior’s role as Dolly Levi fits well with her character and she performed this with much Dolly spirit.

The performance is set out into two acts where Dolly Levi takes the audience on a journey to New York City to ‘meddle’ with the other characters lives. Set in the 1890s where women’s roles and ambitions were very different to today. The audience finds humour in this with songs such as It Takes A Women and Ribbons Down My Back.

Musical numbers originally written by Jerry Herman remain timeless in Hello, Dolly! The Production Company’s live orchestra is on stage throughout the performance and the audience is fortunate with the live jingles that stay in the mind, long after the curtain has been lowered. Each set is a new song and the cast wear elaborate traditional costume, upping the wow factor of the show.

Hello, Dolly! has an ensemble of incredibly talented dancers, singers and actors. From the waiters in the Harmonia Gardens restaurant and the company in the Fourteenth Street Association Parade, there isn’t a moment to be dissatisfied. Dance tricks galore and the highest notes to be hit in songs, are achieved without any glitches.

Filled with all the numbers you may remember such as Hello, Dolly and Put On Your Sunday Clothes, this musical is definitely one to amuse and accommodate, for audiences of all ages.

It almost sounds like the premise of a reality TV show: pile a bunch of artists in a bus for seven days, send them across Mexico and see what happens.
