There’s no denying funk music combined with rap is a sure fire way to get people moving on the dance floor; it just can’t be helped. Melbourne band JackJackJack have played funky tunes around town, and will soon be playing a show at the St Kilda Festival. Milk Bar Mag got to speak with the band’s leader singer and rapper Maggie Baines on what inspires their music and the St Kilda Festival.

How did the band start?
A few of the members of JackJackJack were previously in a band together that disvolved but wanted to keep playing together. They got in contact with me and some others to start a band. We rehearsed once a week; that was a few years ago now.

What made you want to combine hip hop, funk and rock together?
The three core guys, which are Will, Carlo and Richard, they were already planning heavy kind of disco funk with their old band. We have kind of liked that style. We had similar influences like Rage Against The Machine and Red Hot Chili Peppers. They contacted me as I was only freestyling and rapping at the time. We liked the idea of combining it all, that was fun and exciting.

Two of your fellow band members are from South African and Hungary. Do you feel their different backgrounds influence an Australian band like yours?
Every individual brings their own flavour and their values and culture to the band. That definitely brought some really cool sounds and vibes into the band. It could be a bit of column A and column B.

How did the band get involved with the St Kilda Festival?
I’m not entirely sure. We played around St Kilda a lot at Vineyard and Veludo. We submitted some songs I think; either way, I’m just stoked to be playing, it’ll be awesome.

What can the audience at the festival expect?
High energy and loads and loads of fun.
