Cal Wilson’s Undercurrents

Tucked up in an aging function room above a Melbourne institution, Cal Wilson delivered a show that can be described as many things, which seemed to be purposeful. For such a household name and somewhat flag-bearer for local, or Trans-Tasman comedy, this venue didn’t seem fitting for an act like Cal Wilson, but her style of show proved otherwise.

It was by no means substandard, as the comedic styling of this comedic stalwart suited this venue perfectly. In what can only be described as a self-guided tutorial of life, highlighting the obscure, and shining an irrational, yet oddly logical light on matters people tend to gloss over in their everyday life. But I guess that is the purpose of a comedian.

In this intimate affair, Cal had the audience enthralled for the entire hour show with her engaging and participative style, delivering a show that felt unique, but was clearly scripted and well thought out.

Titled Undercurrent with a witty promotional poster, the show didn’t fail to deliver. Comedic acts often have a tendency to embrace the crude and borderline offensive to get a cheap laugh, but in the mark of a true comedic talent, Cal Wilson delivered an utterly enjoyable show without the urge to venture down the crass path.

Discussing topics far reaching from an imaginary friend, Pimimina with incredible telecommunication abilities, to far-reaching abstracts concepts such as otters with egg beaters, this show is definitely a must see on this year’s Comedy Festival circuit.

At a festival with so many quality offerings, Undercurrents is highly recommendable in terms of bang for your buck and you would most certainly not be disappointed if it was the only show you managed to get to this festival. Well refined, highly intelligent, and a great show worth every cent
