Epocha

There’s a Greek word meraki, one of those lovely terms that has no literal translation. Loosely interpreted, meraki refers to transferring a part of oneself into your work. For example, a hand-carved chair that reflects its creator’s passion, some might say soul. Now I don’t speak Greek, but I do believe the term perfectly describes Epocha.

Sitting on Rathdowne Street overlooking Carlton Gardens, Epocha is the latest resident to take the reigns at Montefiore House, a grand old Victorian terrace that has variously been a seminary and a gentleman’s club. It’s now in the capable hands of hospitality heavyweights Angie Giannakodakis (co-owner of Hellenic Republic) and Guy Holder (ex The Press Club, Rockpool, MoMo).

Since opening its large wooden doors in 2012 Epocha has built up a loyal customer base who appreciate the Mediterranean food, European wine list and the personal touch that comes with it. Service is friendly without being fussy – Angie or Guy will give you a few tips to give you the experience you’re after then they let you get back to it  – while never running low on wine.

From the kitchen there’s a range of rich, stick-to-your-ribs dishes. Entrees include charred quail, grape, walnut, radicchio ($18) and Kefalograviera, currants, pickled apricots, verjuice ($14). While larger shared dishes include the excellent baked whole fish with lemon and dill ($MP) which is prepared at the table. I also know one gluten-free gourmand who can’t go past the crispy pigs ears.

Adding to the fancy yet comfort food feel, Epocha is now offering a Sunday roast with all the trimmings.

One more tip, don’t leave without having a drink on the upstairs balcony and enjoying one of the best views in Melbourne. As good a place as any to experience the meraki.

Epocha’s event for the  Melbourne Food and Wine Festival – A Mediterranean Story is on tonight. Catch it if you can.

Somewhere Else video sings of summer

It almost sounds like the premise of a reality TV show: pile a bunch of artists in a bus for seven days, send them across Mexico and see what happens.
