We Steal Secrets: The Story of WikiLeaks

The various lives and times of Wikileaks are exposed in director and producer Alex Gibney’s riveting new documentary feature.  Gibney has previously tackled some of the challenging topics of recent times. Among his targets have been corporate fraud Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room the US Army and torture with the Oscar winning Taxi to the Dark Side

In his latest film, We Steal Secrets: The Story of WikiLeaks, Gibney profiles everyone’s favorite whistle-blowing troupe Wikileaks, but the focus goes beyond figure-head Julian Assange and the mountains of material he made public. The film’s main agenda is to pull the curtain back on the formation and inner workings of the organisation itself.

Whilst also addressing the global impact of the intelligence leaks, the film addresses the cast of characters who kickstarted the whole ordeal, including tech geek Bradley Manning (the US soldier who leaked classified documents and who is still caught up in legal proceedings ) and Adrian Lamo, the Brutus of the bunch of who betrayed the cause. The documentary utilises interviews and startling archival clips, all of which have been smartly pieced together by editor Andy Grieve to create an impressive tapestry of questions.

Gibney’s craft as a documentarian allows him to draw a neutral stance, with the film never condoning or condemning Assange and his sect of secret keepers. It cleverly delivers a dossier of information allowing the audience to arrive at their own conclusions regarding truth, privacy and the nature of free speech.

We Steal Secrets: The Story of WikiLeaks is now on Limited Release.
