Circus Oz somersaults into town

When I was a kid one of the most exciting things to ever happen (besides Expo 88) was the circus coming to town. Back then it was The Great Moscow Circus, a huge bells and whistles production that seemed like the greatest damned shows on earth. They had clowns, monkeys, lions, strong men and all that sort of cool stuff. We were too young to realise the show wasn’t so great for the animals but the mystique of the circus remains.

These days bearded women and smoking chimps have been replaced in the modern circus by exceptionally talented, flexible people that do things seemingly impossible (and incredibly painful.) This week Circus Oz, fresh from touring the US and an extended season in NYC, returns to Melbourne with their new show Cranked Up!

Expect hijinks, high-wires, juggling, magic, acts of daring, lycra and a uniquely Australian take on the circus medium. But besides all this go because circuses are pure theatre and spectacle, and seeing it live is even better than watching it on YouTube. You might even feel young again.

Cranked Up! plays at Birrarung Marr from June 19 – 14 July.
