Broken Lock X Steen Jones

Mutual admiration has blossomed into an exciting collaboration between renowned tattoo artist Steen Jones and local jewellery label Broken Lock.

Jones, who is known for his aerosol art and watercolours, had been in the market for a creative partner since moving to Melbourne, and when the two met through a fellow tattoo enthusiast it seemed like too good an opportunity to pass up.

“Since moving to Melbourne (from Brisbane), I’ve been even more inspired, which has filtered into other collaboration projects with like-minded creatives such as Broken Lock,” said Jones.

“It was a very organic connection.  We became aware of Steen’s work in October 2011, when he launched www.steenjones.com. Then, after catching up at a few subsequent events we discovered a mutual admiration we wanted to explore further,” said Adam Faingold of Broken Lock.

Broken Lock X Steen Jones features six of Jones’ tattoos brought to life in the form of pendants and narrowing down his impressive portfolio of designs proved to be a harder than expected.

“The feel of the collection, well that was the hard part. Originally we started off with so many ideas and designs, but one by one we ruled them out, eventually narrowing it down the six individual and most effective designs for the pendants in the BL x SJ Collection,” says Jones.

Faingold says that wearability was the ultimate factor in choosing designs that would translate well, with images of a bulldog, wolf, panther, horse, eagle and skull making the final cut.

“Once the concept was down, we took a very personal approach to decision making: “What are the six pieces we’d be most excited to wear and hang on the necks of our friends?”

As for the future, both parties can definitely imagine another go at it, even if it does mean a lack of sleep.

“The end product is something we are unashamedly proud of.  To stare down at a completed collection and give yourselves a quiet nod of approval, is a great feeling. So yes, definitely expect another BLxSJ collection in future,” says Faingold.
