Meatball & Wine Bar Opens

Meatballs. There’s something comforting, and pretty funny, about the word. And there’s something even nicer about eating them. The potential to make bad puns (and a mess) is virtually limitless.

Hence it is with no small amount of excitement that we can report the Meatball and Wine Bar is open today for business, serving Melbourne balls from breakfast till late, seven days a week.

Matteo Bruno is a man who loves balls so much he started a place dedicated to them. Matteo’s family is from Northern Italy and he’s brought the family recipes to his new venture. Lending a hand in the kitchen chef Ashlee Connell worked with Matteo in creating a menu of handmade balls.

From the standards of pork and beef to seafood and vegetarian, the Meatball and Wine Bar is not just for fans of the flesh. There’s also a range of gluten free options, a cheese and charcuterie plate and house jerky.

But you’re here for the balls, which come in either three 60g balls plus sauce ($14) or have your balls sitting on something such as Italian beans, creamy polenta or potato smash for $18.

If you’re the type of person who likes experimenting with your balls you have them in a slider or a hero, and there are even mini balls if you don’t like have that much in your mouth at once. And if that’s not enough the menu will feature a rotating ‘celebrity ball’ made from a guest chef’s recipe. At the moment it’s Peter Evans balls on the chopping block: he’s filled them with prawn, garlic and chili!

To wash away the taste of the well sauced balls there’s the whoopie mac – a home made ice-cream sandwich.

The liquor license and breakfast menu arrive next week, but if you can’t wait to tuck into some balls head over now!
