Big Drop Brewing® Co. drops new alcohol-free beer

As Melbourne waddles out of a gruelling Stage 4 lockdown, the light at the end of the tunnel is suddenly brighter, as do opportunities to enjoy a socially distant beverage outside. Parks are dotted with small groups, creek trails hum with the footsteps of walking enthusiasts and picnic dates – lavish or casual in scale – are ubiquitous. Day-drinking, while extremely fun, can become a messy affair, but fortunately Big Drop Brewing® Co.’s range of ultra-low beer can save the day and avoid a nasty hangover.

Launched in 2016, Big Drop was the world’s first brewer dedicated to ultra-low alcohol beer. It has since gone on to win a slew of international awards. The founding pair, then lawyer Rob Fink, and long-time mate, James Kindred, have crafted a range of flavoursome beers, which are now available in Australian bottle shops.

In terms of their process, Big Drop turns the rules of brewing upside down. They begin by using a lazy yeast that is not very good at converting sugar to alcohol, as well as brewing at slightly higher temperatures at various points to further inhibit alcohol production, and incorporate far more types of grain than normal beers. But let’s not linger on the science – let’s get to the taste.

Milk Bar was lucky enough to sample Big Drop’s pale ale and craft lager. The Pine Trail Pale Ale was a delight for the senses, and packed with a rosy, floral aroma with a light and limey citrus bite on the palate. The Uptown Craft Lager is a smooth amber lager that is the perfect companion to any hard and soft cheese, pretzel and crackers picnic set-up. Easy to drink, full-flavoured, and refreshing, you will notice herbal and floral hop aromas, a hint of caramel with peppered spiciness, and a touch of orange at the end. Our preference between the two: Pine Trail Pale Ale receives an honourable mention, but the clear favourite is the Uptown Craft Lager.

Brewed locally in Victoria, both beers are low gluten and low carbohydrate. The pale ale is only 14 carbs and 63 calories per tinnie, and the lager is a mere 8 carbs and 41 calories per can. Also, points to the lager for being a vegan-friendly beverage.
