Hereditary is no joke. Billed as the ‘scariest movie of 2018’ and ‘this generation’s The Exorcist’, these bold statements almost chart into hyperbole territory. So, is this year’s biggest horror film the scariest yet? In short, no, but having watched it, I can attest that it is one hell of a horror flick. Writhing into cinemas Thursday, 7 June, Hereditary is the game-changing horror masterpiece starring the iconic Toni Collette, Gabriel Byrne, Alex Wolff and The Handmaid’s Tale Ann Dowd.

Directed and written by Ari Aster, much of the action takes place at the Graham family home. Upstairs, in the workshop, Annie (Toni Collette), is tinkering with her upcoming art collection – miniatures of her home and significant moments of her life, including caring for her recently deceased mother, Ellen – while everyone else prepares for Ellen’s funeral. Giving her eulogy, Annie alludes to Ellen’s incredibly secretive and aloof nature, and her penchant for occultist rituals. Once Ellen is laid to rest, disturbing secrets about their ancestry begin to unravel and the more they discover, the more they are unable to escape their inherited fate.

Making his feature debut, Aster assembles every device the genre is known for and executes it with spine-tingling precision. Gore, possession, a seance, negative space and that one creepy friend that is a little too close to the family, all create an unholy union that will make you squirm, jump, laugh or scream at different times in the movie. Collette is epic in her role, delivering a career-best performance, as a mother paralysed by immense grief. Her energy is unwavering and simply elevates every scene.
