Ready to meet your soulmate? No, this isn’t a Tinder event, I’m talking soulmates of the fluffy and furry kind. Sunday, 4 February PETstock Assist is working paw-in-paw with not-for-profit animal rescue organisation, PetRescue, to raise awareness for pet adoption.

Their message: adopt, don’t shop.

Annually in Australia, 200 000 perfectly loveable pets find themselves abandoned in shelters and pounds. It’s a statistic that needs to change.

If just ONE in five pet seekers chose to adopt, we could end pet homelessness in Australia. “Our goal is for every rescue pet to find their forever home, and we’re getting closer,” says PETstock CEO, Shane Young. “PetRescue figures show the adoption of pets is increasing year-on-year, demonstrating how saving every homeless pet in Australia is possible, but we still have a way to go.”

As part of National Pet Adoption Day, you can drop into your local PETstock and give an animal a second chance. Pets of all types, sizes, breeds and ages will be available for adoption — you may be surprised by whose eyes you’ll meet across the room.

Bit nervous? You’re right, it’s a big step. But you won’t be alone. The rescue group are there to help you figure out when to “swipe right”, providing you with an overview of the animal’s behaviour and personality.

Last year, 500 pets found their forever homes and the team are looking to increase that figure in 2018. Rescue pets are already trained (no accidents around the house), they’ve grown into their personalities (what you see is what you get), and they’re cost effective (they come health-checked, de-sexed, vaccinated, wormed and treated for fleas). And the best bit? All they want from you is love.
