Bella Union

The lights at Bella Union will be turned off this week, and when they shut their doors, we say goodbye to one of Melbourne’s most underrated venues. Home to the popular Mr Clelland’s Finishing School — a fortnightly dance club disguised as a 90s high school gymnasium decked out for Prom Night — a place where you can belt out the lyrics to Withering Heights or Mr Brightside at the top of the lungs. Milk Bar Mag checked out the resurrected The Anarchist Guild Social Committee’s final (for now) show and gives you the run down of the events to check out this week.

The Anarchist Guild Social Committee features a motley crew of Australia’s finest comics. The hilarious bunch include Nick Caddaye, Andrew McClelland, Kelly Fastuca, Tegan Higginbotham, Richard McKenzie and Celia Pacquola, from ABC comedy hits Utopia and Rosehaven. Founded by Caddaye in 2008, the sketch show didn’t lose its spark nor did the chemistry between the performers. The two-hour show revisited classic sketches — including the hilarious Don Bosco sketch — and all-new material.

Bella Union’s final week caps off with Loving Cup: A Celebration of the Songs of the Rolling Stones, a benefit event for the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre and Launch Housing. The night is replete with classic tunes, a superb house band and a bevy of special guests, so mark the night in your calendar — Bella Union is celebrating in style!

Somewhere Else video sings of summer

It almost sounds like the premise of a reality TV show: pile a bunch of artists in a bus for seven days, send them across Mexico and see what happens.
