Young up and coming Melbourne-based pop singer and DJ, Rachel Costanzo, is about to shake up the Aussie music industry with her brand new single, Start Again. The brave and bubbly 20-year-old has released her fourth single in Australia. Combining incredible vocals inspired by the likes of Ariana Grande and a contagious melody, Start Again will electrify and excite listeners.

Milk Bar Mag was lucky to catch up with the young starlet and discussed her journey as a singer, her biggest standouts in her career thus far, and her future goals.

What inspired you to start singing?

My nonno (grandpa) inspired me to start singing and playing the piano and guitar when I was around about 5-years-old. Since then I’ll do anything to make him proud as he watches over me!

What’s your new single Start Again all about?

My new single is about starting fresh in life! No matter how much you’ve been through or how hard some days may seem, you can always wake up the next day and ‘start again’ and do something positive to improve your life and make it what you want it to be.

How do you feel you’ve developed as a singer and DJ throughout your journey?

I feel like I have developed so much, I used to just be a singer that performed here and there around cafes and now I sing & DJ all over Melbourne, so to go from doing tiny little gigs to now being a little bit known for my music is a great feeling.

What’s it like working with Michael Paynter?

Working with Paynter and also Delo has always been a great experience. They are so fun to work with and they get the work done super fast which I love! They always help bring my ideas to life and that’s why I always choose to write with them when I can.

You have an awesome YouTube channel —  how do you feel people’s feedback on there has influenced your music?

I love YouTube! And I love uploading covers every week for my subscribers. I feel like the feedback I get on YouTube is great.. I mean I sometimes get the occasional ‘this is sh***’ but everyone has an opinion but I never let negative feedback get to me.. I always just try and improve my next cover I do.

If you could describe yourself in three words, which would they be and why?

Funny, outgoing & caring would be the 3 words to describe me. I love making everyone around me laugh (most the time) [Laughs] and I am also so outgoing and caring towards everyone I am with or know.

What do you like the most about performing live, especially on shows such as the X Factor etc?

I love just getting out there and getting exposed with my music. Building a fan base is definitely something I’ve been working on for so long so to get those big opportunities is great for me.

It’s amazing that you’ve headlined Teen Expo for the past two years. What advice would you give others who are struggling through various hardships in their lives?

My advice would be to never give up. I went through depression for two years in high school and I almost did give up fully, but I pushed myself to get up everyday and change certain things in my life to help me get through things. I never gave up and that’s what everyone else has to do. If I had of given up I wouldn’t be where I am now. And that’s the same for everybody. There’s a whole amazing world out there and you can achieve anything you want if you put your mind to it.

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?

Italy! I am Italian so I can’t wait to travel there and hopefully travel there with my music!

What are your future goals?

My future goals are to travel the world with my music and to have an amazing big fan base that follows me everywhere I go.

I’d love to be known in Australia first and then expand!

Somewhere Else video sings of summer

It almost sounds like the premise of a reality TV show: pile a bunch of artists in a bus for seven days, send them across Mexico and see what happens.
