Melbourne Music Week: Underwater Galaxies

This week’s balmy nights have been made even sweeter by the plethora of good vibes and hidden talent buzzing around the CBD for Melbourne Music Week. Bought to us by City of Melbourne, MMW is an eight day program dedicated to illuminating the city’s robust, world-renowned music scene through their free and affordable shows in pop up venues, laneways and spaces that our city is famous for. The full program of artists all reflect Melbourne’s multi-faceted, inimitable creative identity.

As part of the ‘Self Made’ series, Stargazed Projection Art + Music Festival bought us ‘Underwater Galaxies,’ a night of incredible Australian musicians and visual artists to create a world underwater. Ding Dong Lounge was moderately transformed into an underwater wonderland – there could have been a lot more theming in terms of décor and lighting, but I felt like I was floating at one stage, so I guess they did their job right!

Stunning visuals were projected onto an art installation intertwining with a dark, idiosyncratic mix of PSYCHEDELIC, ELECTRONIC, SHOEGAZE & EXPERIMENTAL acts – Dark Fair, Pony Face, Beloved Elk, Primitive Calculators, Fierce Mild, headliners Rat & Co, Kalacoma and Eddie Hale. I arrived to see Fierce Mild, who were young and full of energy. Their communication and connection as a group was somewhat disjointed, but heads were bobbing and there was cheering and whooping from the eclectic mix of crowd.

The main event was ambient electronic group Rat and Co. Joshua Delaney, John Waller and Nick Park are three cool dudes who get stuck in and make great music, which is taken to the next level by the projections making it a full sensory experience. I loved the way they are so comfortable onstage and have no ego at all. The room loved it too. You get a great sense of their maturity as musicians as they deliver a slick performance and each song builds in its own unique way; there were moments where people were swaying, standing, getting lost in the music, and moments where people had a little boogie too.

After that the night kicked off, the beverages flowed, there was a DJ in the smoking area and people out and about enjoying their Friday. It’s amazing how lights can really lift performances so I highly commend all the visual artists involved. Support these events as much as you can, as there is something so uplifting about submerging yourself in a night of music and visuals and it creates all the right warm fuzzy feelings that make this town buzz.
