Jack Reacher: Never Go Back

Say what you will about Tom Cruise’s personal life, but the guy makes some bloody good movies! Cruise is at it again with a sequel to his 2012 hit action/thriller Jack Reacher with its sequel, Jack Reacher: Never Go Back.

The sequel entails former U.S. Army major Jack Reacher (Cruise) discovering he may have a daughter he never knew about, causing him to be entangled in a government conspiracy and be tailed by people wanting to eliminate him. Major Susan Turner (Cobie Smulders) is framed for committing espionage, and must work with Reacher to clear her name.

The film is in many ways a pretty typical action film, such as having a disillusioned drifter who used to be a somebody in the military, people being set up, government conspiracies and the such. But if the film in question is entertaining, then who the hell cares? Jack Reacher: Never Go Back is ace, a very enjoyable action flick that shows that Cruise has still got it.

Director Edward Zwick, who has worked with Cruise before on the 2003 epic The Last Samurai, knows how to keep the pace and thrills coming without being too in-your-face about it. There are plenty of laughs to be had throughout the film, as well as some great action sequences (naturally). The acting is all around good, with Smulders sparring well with Cruise, as does Danika Yarosh, who plays Reacher’s possible long lost daughter.

The first Jack Reacher film is the only film outside of the Mission: Impossible series that Cruise has made a sequel to, so don’t be surprised if there’s more of these bad boys to come out in the next couple of years.

Jack Reacher: Never Go Back
Released nationally on Thursday 20 October
