Punchbowl Canteen

“Keep it simple, but do it well,” says Elizabeth Milroy, Head Chef of Punchbowl Canteen, one of the newest Melbourne eateries to pop up in the industrial side streets of Port Melbourne, serving delicious but simple meals which have a strong focus on local produce.

What used to be an area primarily flocked by suits during the week seeking business luncheons is now changing as Bay Street becomes a location for Melbourne foodies, diners and tastemakers and Punchbowl Canteen is happily pleasing the tastebuds of many.

House favourites include Fish Cake Scotch Egg with Radish, Black Bean and a Poached Egg, Vegan Smoothies and Shaved Beetroot Salad.

Coffee is also another highlight, locally sourced from the Fitzroy roaster – Industry beans. Cold drip with brewed coffee cubes and golden lattes are also another attraction.

The ambiance of its former lives shines through at Punchbowl Canteen, the building once housing the Saldford Lads Club and Tulip Easter Egg Factory, and is now layered with a colourful 10 foot mural by Australian illustrator and designer Leah Bartholomew to showcase the high ceilings.

Patrons can admire a custom-made wood fire oven, an al-fresco space perfect for prams, bikes, types and scooters with plenty of green space to feel like you have escaped the city.

It almost sounds like the premise of a reality TV show: pile a bunch of artists in a bus for seven days, send them across Mexico and see what happens.
