Next Move is an artistic experiment incorporating the human body, space and dance to retell stories of the imagination. The latest incarnation of Next Move opened at Chunky Move on Friday September 9 and captivated audiences with two brilliant, very distinct performances.

The production explores the artistic possibilities of collaboration– whether it is fleeting and momentary or something more substantial – and the opportunity to create something organic and unique form the basis of Next Move.

Re-make is a response to the increasingly accelerating world we inhabit and how concepts of time – past, present and future – are warped and more fluid than they appear. The performance explores daily struggles of world between preserving tradition and the desire to reinvent ourselves and our surroundings. Racy red boots and guitar strumming do make an appearance but the real stars go to Melanie Lane – a world-renowned choreographer and performer – and Juliet Burnett – an experienced ballet dancer – who bring these themes to life through exquisite movement.

The second act is a portrayal of two individuals – who may be friends or strangers, their connection is not disclosed – who navigate through streams of light-hearted and witty conversational threads. The performance is better known as Mermermer and toys with ideas of of melodrama, extinction, documentation and myth-making. Jo Lloyd and Nicola Gunn – the pair behind Mermermer – have been collaborating since 2013 and state their work “is open to continual reassessment”.

Next Move is an engaging and thought-provoking production that should not be overlooked – enjoy!
