The ever stylish Academy Kitchen & Bar has launched a new autumn menu full of vibrant colours, exquisite flavours and the wonderful comforts highly sought in cooler months. Milk Bar Mag was lucky enough to visit the popular Bridge Road eatery and sample some of its signature dishes.

Returning to Academy, it is quite clear that the same casual, effortless and charming vibe is still in the air. Seated at a corner table, we were privy to renowned chef and owner Will Manning’s vision behind his stunning menu. ‘The vision for Academy has always been to create that genuine neighbourhood restaurant charm – warm, welcoming, relaxed, accessible to all,’ says Will. And he does not disappoint.

Manning ensures he selects only the best in-season, locally sourced produce, which only heightens the sensory experience to be had. Appealing to its local populace, Academy’s house-made pasta has always been a standout and remains prominent in the new menu. The most indulgent new arrivals have to be the ‘salmon terrine with dill crème fraiche, saffron aioli, caperberries and sorel’ – the perfect starter dish – and the ‘braised lamb shank rigatoni with parmigiano reggiano and crispy anchovies’ – bursting with flavour with every bite.

But if those two options sound too fancy for your tastebuds, the ‘hangar steak with roasted kipfler potatoes, caramelised shallots, red wine sauce and béarnaise’ is cooked to perfection and will satisfy the most basic diner. For wine lovers, there is something for everyone but I would highly recommend the Austrian white Brundlmeye L&T Gruner.

If you have kept up with me so far, I hope you have left some room for dessert because it is sure to get your attention. You cannot look away from the Tiramisundae even if you tried. It is a dark and rich dessert that keeps on giving: coffee mascarpone with marsala soaked sponge and chocolate sorbet.

The tunes were jamming, the staff were attentive – this is one experience that is sure to delight. Academy Kitchen & Bar keep up the outstanding work!

Somewhere Else video sings of summer

It almost sounds like the premise of a reality TV show: pile a bunch of artists in a bus for seven days, send them across Mexico and see what happens.
